Rob Gentleman - designer/builder

I've always been fascinated by the creative aspect of the building process. As a child playing with Lego, I would often put the instructions aside and see what weird and wonderful things I could create on my own. Growing up, I was never interested in shop classes in school as they always seemed too structured and sterile with little opportunity for creative expression. We did have a small workshop at home though which allowed me to become acquainted with a variety of hand tools. I dabbled with some rough carpentry projects, my dad occasionally stepping in to explain the artist's virtues of patience, persistence, and detail. As a university student, I ran a small deck and fence business, further honing the skills of my craft.  After university, I decided to pursue my passion of building and officially set up shop as a custom furniture builder.

My design taste has always been casual and rustic. I enjoy the relaxed feel and the 'rough around the edges' appearance. The Japanese call it 'Wabi Sabi', a Buddhist concept which means beauty in imperfection. I adopted this as my personal design philosophy years ago. I love the 'imperfections' in an old piece of wood - the cracks, the wrinkles, the distress marks. That's what tells the story.

I take pride in connecting with each of my clients. I like to get to know them and understand their design needs. I want to be sure that what I build is aesthetically pleasing, meets their practical needs, and has a special meaning to them. I always try to source wood that has a local connection. I've even had clients give me wood from their own property. It adds so much value to a piece to have a personal story attached to it.

I love what I do and I'd love to share it with you. Feel free to get in touch with me if you'd like to discuss your ideas. You can also connect with me on my social media pages.
